It has been another busy week in year two and it has been lovely to celebrate your children’s progress at learning conversations.

We have reminded ourselves of our five school values – courage, empathy, gratitude, respect and trust and started to learn about the British values of democracy, liberty, mutual respect, rule of law and tolerance.

Summary of learning

In Maths, we continued to consolidate our number bonds to and within 20 and to use this knowledge to complete fact families. Next week, we will move on to our number bonds to 100. This all requires children to apply related facts:  If we know that 4 + 2 = 6 then we know that 14 + 2 is 16 and that 40 + 20 = 60. This is why it is so important that their number bonds within 10 are secure. Numbots will really help with this. Little and often works best and at least 30 minutes each week.

In English, we have written the text for our transition booklets for the current cohort of year one children.  The grammar focus has been using coordinating conjunctions to join two main clauses together to create an expanded sentence. FANBOYS is a helpful acronym for remembering the seven coordinating conjunctions. Our focus has been on using and, but, or. Next week, we will revise (improve) our writing by adding subheadings.

In Geography, we have started to explore some of the human and physical features in Cambridge. It is important that your child knows that Cambridge is a city and that Eddington is located in its north-west. If you are out and about in Cambridge over the weekend, take the opportunity to identify some key landmarks – the colleges, the Fitzwilliam museum, the railway station, the meadows, the backs, the river Cam, the various bridges– and see if your child can correctly identify if it is a human or physical feature. Next week, we will learn about some of London’s landmarks and start doing some grid reference map work to locate them.

In phonics, this week and next week our focus sound is /i/, we are reviewing /ee/ and retrieving /d/ and /ue/. Phonics books will be changed on Thursday 21st November due to the INSET day. Please ensure you are reading these daily alongside a reading for pleasure book. Start to ask your child questions about what they are reading to support the development of their comprehension skills.
