What a wonderful fun filled week of brilliant learning in year two! We also started art lessons in which we looked at different techniques of drawing King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

Summary of learning

In Maths, we have been learning how to subtract across a 10. Please revisit this week’s leaning and try extra practice as this will really help your child become secure with subtraction across 10. W2 subtracting across 10 resources

In English, we have introduced our new writing project-story writing. We had an ‘ideas party’ in which children generated ideas for their own characters sparked by existing books. We shared ideas and revisited the GAP- genre, audience and purpose. As a class we decided on a checklist and began to create the illustrations of our book covers.

Our grammar focus has been superlative adjectives that use the suffix -est. For example: happiest, biggest and greatest.

In History, we have been learning about “monarchy” and the line of succession to the British throne. Children thoroughly enjoyed creating royal portraits that included objects of symbolism.

In STEM, our focus is materials and their properties. We learnt how to identify an object; it’s material and its property. We have been focusing on working scientifically and be able to ask our own simple questions and recognizing that they can be answered in different ways.

In Phonics, our focus sound this week is /er/ and we have been recapping the /n/ sound. As ever, please read with your child daily using both the decodable books and reading for pleasure books. Phonics books will be changed in the morning next Thursday 22nd January.

A message from FOCUS- As we approach the warmer months of the year, FOCUS is planning a range of activities – such as bake sales – to strengthen our parent community and raise funds for the school. Please consider signing up to become a class representative and help us achieve these goals. We are still looking for a class rep for Swifts. If you are interested, please email focusucps@gmail.com.

Happy Weekend Everyone!
