Dear Parents and carers

We have had a brilliant week in Year 1!

World Book Day: this week we have been fortunate enough to have been visited by an author and an illustrator who have just published a brand new picture book: Elki is Not My Dog. We had a special assembly all about the new book. Throughout the day, we had wonderful workshops were we leaned how to make our own picture books.

Maths: we have been working hard learning about near doubles and numberbonds to 20. Here is a link to the learning we did in class this week. Revisiting this work at home would be very valuable for our children.

English: using Lemony Snicket’s The Dark as inspiration, we collected data on what makes us feel afraid. We used this data to write sentences about what we are and are not afraid of. Here is a list of the common exception words our children need to learn to spell. Finding time to practise spelling these words at home will really support your child’s writing.

Phonics: the sound we have been focusing on this week is ‘u’, spelt -ou- as in ‘double’, -o- as in ‘love’ and -u- as in ‘fun’.

Forest School: we had a fantastic time scouring the ground for different types of leaves. We have identified the first signs of Spring around our school! Lots of the children built dens and some even made bug hotels and bird feeding spots.

Science: this week we learnt all about potatoes. We found out that there are over 5000 different types of potato in the world, and that many of the world’s variety grow in Peru. If you’d like to learn all about the potato growing process with your child, try this video!

Thank you for continuing to remember your child’s forest school kit on a Thursday. This should consist of waterproof bottoms, jacket and wellies/ waterproof boots.

Have a great weekend all,

The Year 1 Team
