We have had another wonderful week in Year 1.  During our Science lessons this week, the children have been learning about how seasonal change can affect daylight. We had some super discussions about why there are more hours of sun during the Summer. The children experimented with day and night using a globe and a torch. We then applied our new learning about shadows to make our own shadow puppet shows.

In English, we have been learning about the use of adjectives as describing words using the story ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker as a stimulus. We have been describing pages from the book using powerful adjectives and introducing noun phrases and even some expanded noun phrases. Well done Year 1!

In Maths this week we have been learning about whole and not whole using the stem sentences:

‘This is a whole ______because I have all of it’ and ‘This is not a whole_________ because I only have a part of it.’  We also worked out different ways that an object can be split into two parts (or more!).

In Phonics, we have been working with VCC and CVCC words. We also have been reading and writing the common exception words, ‘me’ and ‘be’.

In TastEd this week, we have been using our sense of smell and taste different types of fruit like peaches, oranges, limes, apples and strawberries.

In PE the children have been developing their balancing skills.

Next week

In Maths, we will continue with part and whole.  This time the children will learn about a whole as a group and ways this can be represented.

In English, we will be writing our own stories about the land behind the magic door. We will also be applying all that we have learnt about noun phrases in our writing challenges over the week.

In Phonics, we will be focusing in hearing and reading vowels and consonants in words and writing these in the correct order.

In Science, we are going to learn about World Food Day and discuss about the journey the food has to make from the crops to our plates.

In Topic, we will continue learning about the 7 continents and we will use the cardinal points to give directions.

In Physical Education we will continue developing our balancing skills, standing on one foot for 10 to 30 seconds and doing mini-squats.

In TastEd we will taste the texture of a carrot depending on how we slice or chop or grate it.

Have a great weekend!
