Dear parents and careers,

It has been an exciting week! Thank you if you were able to support your child in the showcase and/or at Family Friday.

In English, our focus book has been ‘Found You’ by Devon Holswarth. Children have used this text to learn how to use verbs with -ed and -ing endings. As a half term challenge, you and your child could write a story about finding a new friend, using the -ing and -ed verb endings correctly.

In Maths, we have been doubling numbers as well as sharing and grouping. The children have been counting how many groups there are and how many are in each group. Here is a sheet to review this learning together at home.

In Phonics, we have continued to learn the different spellings for the /ar/ sound.

We have identified the -ar- spellings:

a – ,   ask, mask, bask

al –calm, palm, balm

ar – cart, farm, barn

au – laughing, draughty.

Phonics screening check: next half term, the children will be completing the phonics screening check which is a statutory year 1 assessment. Children will be asked to read real words and nonsense words with a teacher to determine how well their phonetical knowledge is developing. Some children have been given flashcards to practise with at home. Please run through these cards daily with your child and practise reading and writing words with these sounds in them to support your child’s understanding of phonics. Please be reassured that the assessment will not feel like anything out of the ordinary for the children and will feel similar to the teaching and learning they ordinarily partake in during school.

Here is a website that contains interactive games to support phonics. If you would like to practise the phonics screening at home, here are some previous assessments.

Revisit-Here are the sounds taught so far. Please review these with your child and continue to regularly revisit to consolidate learning.
