Wow! What a wonderfully busy and productive week we have had in Year One! We have continued to think about the buildings of London in 1666. We decided to create ‘Pudding Lane’ in our classroom by drawing houses and creating flames for our street. We are very proud of our ‘Pudding Lane’!
During our English lessons we transported ourselves back in time to 1666 and imagined we were waking up to the sights, sounds and smells of the Great Fire of London. We thought about some of the reasons for the spread of the fire and decided to ask the Lord Mayor for his help. We explored different examples of letters before writing our own letters to the Lord Mayor. The teachers have ben VERY impressed with the fantastic writing produced by your children, here are two of our letters to the Lord Mayor:
During Maths we have been thinking about subtraction as finding a missing part. We then applied our knowledge of addition and subtraction in a problem where we had to spot all of the calculations. We explored a picture of a birthday party and spotted lots of calculations!
Next week
English: We will continue to work on writing letters to persuade- we will need to convince King Charles II to help with the Great Fire of London!
Phonics: We will focus on the different spellings of /oe/ including:
oa as in boat, ow as in snow, oe as in toe, o_e as in stone and o as in go.
Maths: We will be using a first, then and now board to tell an addition or subtraction story. We will also be applying our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to solve a problem.
Topic: We will be comparing London in 1666 with modern London.
STEM day: On Thursday 25th 25th November we will taking part in STEM day. For this we will need lots of cardboard so please could you bring some in if you have any. Cardboard pieces – various sizes (boxes/cereal packets etc).
Please can we also have empty boxes for our Pudding Lanes.
We look forward to seeing you all during Learning Conversations and sharing the super progress your children have already made.
The Year One TEAM.
