Dear Parents and carers,

We have been busy with our learning this week in Year 1!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream performance: we had a very special performance from a team of visiting actors this week. The children were able to recall the story of A Midsummer Night’s dream after watching the show, and really enjoyed the experience.

Maths: we have been subtracting this week. Please review the classroom learning at home with your child.

English: this week we have been learning about the suffixes s or es for plurals. We have also written our own versions of the children’s classic – The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Why not ask you child to tell you their version of the story?

Phonics: the sound we have been focusing on this week is ‘s’ spelt -s- as in ‘same’; -ss- as in ‘dress’ , -c- as in cymbal and -st- as in ‘whistle’. Please continue to work on the common exception words at home. You will find a list here.

Forest School: this week we made woodland animals using clay and sticks in the forest area. We also observed the arrival of Spring and did some mindful drawing whilst sitting on the logs.

Science: this week we have planted some beans in a bag. We used broad beans and put water in the bottom of our bags. Over the coming weeks, we will observe our beans closely, and make predictions about what will happen next.

Old t-shirts: please could you send your child in with an old child’s size t-shirt. This will be used for our Design Technology (sewing) projects next half-term. No need to buy a new one – an unwanted, old one will do perfectly.

Family Friday: we will be welcoming parents and carers into class at 8.30am on Friday 22nd March.

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Year 1 Team
