Happy New Year! The children have had a great first week back to school, we have enjoyed hearing all about what they have been up to over the holidays.

We have launched our new topic ‘All you need is love’ through our first key text: A Jar of Happiness where we thought about our emotions, focusing on what makes us happy and listening to what makes our friends happy-we then decorated our own jars and filled them with happiness. (Thankyou to the amazing contributions of Jars that meant we all had a jar to decorate)

Next week we will be thinking about what makes other people happy and writing a line poem about it…can you ask your family what makes them happy? What about your pets, do you know what makes them happy?

In Maths, we have been learning about subtraction, using part whole models and maths stories to develop our understanding of how to find missing parts of the equation. For example, ‘First there were 4 birds. Then one flew away. Now there are 3 birds’. We also looked at subtraction as the inverse of addition If 6 take away 2 is 4, then I know that 4 plus 2 is 6.

At home: can you create some maths stories at home with objects around your house?

In Topic we have been learning all about patterns,, finding them in our environment and then creating them out of materials. Can you find any patterns at home? Are they the same as the ones at school?

Next week:

Maths: subtraction as inverse of addition.

English: line poems: focusing on what makes others happy.

Phonics: ie (flies on my pie) , i_e (nice smile)
