- English: We continued to explore the key text ‘The Jar of Happiness’ in more depth with a purpose to write a poem about our family. First we looked at the characters in the story and began to imagine what happiness might look like for each of them. Would happiness look the same for the cat and the mum? Children who had pets, grandparents and siblings began to relate to the characters which encouraged them to think about the unique thoughts that make each of us happy. The children wrote line poems ensuring each line of the poem was on a separate line, an example “Happiness for my Dad is to play golf” Happiness for my sister is to build amazing Lego models” “Happiness for my Grandma is coming to visit me in Cambridge”
- Maths: We have learnt to subtract by using a counting back method and recording this on a number line. It was important that we only moved the frog 1 number backwards when jumping and to be accurate when drawing the jumps on the number track. The children then challenged their thinking and checked their subtraction equations with an inverse equation e.g. “I know that 10-4=6 because I know 4+6=10” Can your child show you how to use a number track to show how to answer subtraction equations e.g. 12-4= 8-3= 16-4=
- Phonics: Split digraph i_e as in nice smile and ie as in flies on the pie Tricky words spelling ‘friend’
- Art: The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the creative learning street challenges which enabled them to dress up in 60’s clothing, perform on a stage, design and build music instruments, listen to musical CD’s. It was fantastic to see the children fully expressing themselves through music, drama and singing. We have explored repeating patterns in preparation for 60’s fashion design later in the term.
- Singing : We are starting to practice singing some 60’s songs next week, please fell free to listen to them with your child to support them learning the lyrics. ‘We all live in a yellow submarine’ ‘All you need is love’ ‘Here comes the sun’
