We would like to wish all our UCPS families a very warm welcome back to school. We look forward to yet another year full of joyful learning!

Year one children have settled into their new classes brilliantly and we have enjoyed listening to all of their summer adventures!

This week we have been settling into our class routines, learning each other’s names and getting to know each other.

English: Our main focus has been on revisiting our school values. Each day we have focused on a different one, starting with Trust, Gratitude, Respect, Courage and Empathy.

We also thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Colour Monsters’ and discussing any worries, various emotions we may feel in different situations and made sure we understood who we can talk to about them.

Maths: This week we have been focusing on counting. Please support your child to be able to confidently count from 0-20 and write these numerals. Counting is super fun and can be done in a very natural and playful way in everyday activities. Setting the table, counting the plates, cutlery, cups etc.

Handwriting:

Please continue to support your child at home with being able to write their names using a clear capital letter at the beginning of their name and practice correct letter formation.

Most importantly, continue with reading for pleasure. Storys both old and new, poems, comics, magazines, signs in the environment, recipes and shopping lists! Create some together!

Other Information:

Please ensure your child brings a clearly named PE kit ready for Monday’s session. It is advisable to have both shorts and track suit bottoms with a zippy/hooded top, ready for both hot and cold weather.  Both sessions will be held outside. Black or Navy bottoms, white t-shirt, socks and appropriate black trainers, no laces please unless your child can tie them independently. Encourage your child to change up and fold their clothes into a neat pile within five minutes! A great and fun challenge!

Snacks

The school provides all children in KS1 with fruit or vegetables. However, please do send your child in with an extra healthy snack if you wish but this must contain no nuts.

Please ensure sun protection cream and hats are clearly labelled, cream should be applied before the start of school.

Parent meetings

Next week, Miss Millar will be holding a meeting for year 1 parents and carers on Thursday 14th September at 3.30pm in the seminar rooms. Please come through the office and she looks forward to seeing you there! If you are unable to attend the workshop, the presentation will be sent to you via ParentMail.

Family Board

We are busy creating our new class family boards for the year and would love a family photo from each family to put on display, extended family, grandparents also welcome. In addition to this please hand write ‘welcome’ or ‘hello’ in your home language to add to your photo. It would help if you the language it is in and your child’s name.

Thank you all for such a positive and happy start to this new year!

Year One Team.
