Dear Parents,
Year 1 have had another busy week!
In phonics we have been focusing on the ‘oe’ sound spelt /o/ (cold) and /ow/ (snow). Please continue to read your child’s phonics book daily at home.
In English, we have been continuing to enjoy some well know traditional tales including Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood. Our focus in writing continues to be to write sentences using a capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. As a challenge, the children have been trying to write sentences to retell a story.
In Maths, we have been practising our numberbonds – the numbers that add up to make 10. Fluency is so important in this aspect of maths, so any practice you can do at home will be valuable.
In Science, we have been reviewing all our wonderful weather learning from this half term. We have looked rain gauges, seasons and different the types of weather we can experience.
The first week back will be Arts Week and we will be creating lots of things linked to the Russian folktale The Firebird. If you would like to enjoy some Firebird activities at home together over the half-term, here are some suggestions:
- Identify Russia on a map. What do you notice?
- Research Russia. What are some of the cultural traditions?
- Who was Igor Stravinsky? Look at what he did.
- Listen to The Firebird: Finale – YouTube
- If you have any Russian Dolls at home – explore these together. If not, have a look online and find out about them.
It was so lovely to see so many of you at our first Family Friday. We really enjoyed celebrating all of the children’s hard work together.
Please could you remember to bring in some newspaper when you return to school. Also, if anyone has any unwanted balloons that are unused we would be very grateful for them!
Wishing you a wonderful half-term break.
