‘Run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man’.

This week the children have had a wonderful time exploring The Gingerbread Man story in their three classes. We have learnt new songs, pretended to be different characters and even built our own hand puppets to retell the story.

In Phonics we have been learning the oa and ow digraphs. Can you have a go at writing some of these words at home?

In Physical Development the children have been learning about the Commonwealth games taking place in Birmingham 2022. The children have learnt some new facts and been inspired to practice their own skills in throwing and catching. They have been showing great determination and have kept trying when activities have been a little bit tricky.

In Maths, we recalled our number bonds to both 5 and 10. We are all so confident using a variety of resources to demonstrate our understanding and explain how we know those important number facts. This number knowledge is such an important aspect of their preparation for Year 1 so we are really pleased with the deep understanding that children have.

Next Week-

In Maths, we will recap bring together our doubling skills and our sharing knowledge for some challenging problem solving! Reception love a challenge so we know this number work will be welcomed by our number lovers.

In Phonics, we will introduce digraphs ‘ng’ and ‘qu’. You can begin to look at these at home. Maybe you could start to spot those digraphs as you read your bedtime stories?

Important messages for next week:

As highlighted in the newsletter, please can we have your help in gathering, Corrugated cardboard, Cardboard envelopes (no labels on them), Black bed sheets and Metal frame backpacks for our Reception STEAM learning.

Please see the below message that was sent to you on tapestry regarding our PSHCE-

Next week, in our PSHCE lessons we will be thinking about our bodies and how they change as we grow (focussed on what the children have already experienced ages 0-5 and nothing beyond). If possible, please could you send 3 photographs on Tapestry

1- Your child when they were a baby
2- Your child when they were a toddler
3- Your child now

We will be discussing how we have grown taller, our hands have grown, our feet etc. So any photographs that particularly show this would be wonderful. We will be using these photographs on Thursday.

Other information- During one PSHCE lesson, we will ensure that children know the ‘doctor names’ (Scientifically correct) for their private parts. We will use the terms penis, testicles and vagina as stated in our Relationships Education Policy https://universityprimaryschool.org.uk/about-our-school/statutory/ We do not need you to do anything to prepare your child for this session but like to keep you informed so that you do not have too much of a shock if these learning objectives are mentioned at the dinner table!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Reception team
