This week in Reception we have been looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We have been writing sentences about the Big Bad Wolf, and in group time we were reading and sorting statements about each character. Can you try this activity at home?

In phonics this week we have continued our first unit from the extended code, reading and writing words with the sound /ae/ in them. There are four different spellings for this sound that we have learnt – ai, ay, ea, a_e. Can you try reading and writing some words at home?

  • Train
  • Play
  • Great
  • Bake

We have continued our philosophy sessions this week, looking at ‘bikes and certainty’. We have asked questions like:

  • Can it be a bike if it doesn’t have wheels?
  • If it looks like a bike does that mean it is?
  • Can it be two different things?

We have also looked at our weekly Philosophy Corner session, where we discussed ‘Are the best things in life free?’

Feel free to watch the following video at home with your children to continue the discussion.

Hot Weather

Please remember that your child needs to come into school with sun cream already applied on a morning, and a small bottle (named) to keep in school, which they will reapply after lunch. Please also ensure your child has a sunhat in school with them or they will not be able to play outside.

A couple of weeks ago we were lucky enough to have a storyteller visit Reception to launch our Traditional Tales project. She has been kind enough to point us to the Raymond Briggs exhibition running throughout the summer that might be of interest to you and your child. There are several fun children’s events in the summer holidays – four different workshops, starting with Fun with Fungus the Bogeyman! on 27th July.

Enjoy your weekend,

Reception Team.
