Wow! What a short but wonderful week it has been. We started our week with a theatre trip to see The Nutcracker, which, we are sure all the children will agree, was fabulous! As we have been wrapping up for our Christmas holidays (pun not intended), we have had many festive activities in the classroom for the children to enjoy. They have been making cards, adding decorations to Christmas trees and doing some festive counting using bows and baubles.

This week in phonics, we have been reviewing most sounds from the SoundsWrite units covered so far. We have been practicing reading and writing words such as Jim, Tim, fed, the, as well as writing some sentences Dan ran in the mud. Dan had fun.

We have also had the opportunity to assess which sounds all the children know. In your reading folder, you will find a sheet with all the sounds covered so far, with the highlighted sounds being the sounds that your child is secure on. Please note that we have assessed not only if they know the sounds, but also if they can pronounce them correctly.

If you would like to further support your child with their learning during the break, here is a brief overview of what has been covered in phonics and maths this term:

Phonics units 1-6:

  • Sounds: a i m s t n o p
  • Reading and writing words & sentences.
  • Spotting which sounds have been ‘swapped’ from words (zip – zap – zagrag)

Maths:

  • Principles of counting
  • Subitising (up to 5)
  • More/ fewer than (collection of objects)
  • 1 more than/ 1 less than

Finally, we would like to kindly request if you are able to upload 1 photo of your child from their Christmas break onto Tapestry. We will be talking about their photo during class in the first week back. Please also bring into school a full labelled PE kit that can be kept in school (white top, black shorts, black jogging bottoms, warm navy or black jumper and trainers).

We hope you all have a wonderful break and a Happy New Year!
