Another fun filled week in Reception!

This week the children continued their phonics lessons. We are really getting the hang of concentrating during these sessions, looking after our resources and participating in the learning. The children are encouraged to read a word written by an adult, look carefully at each sound and have a go at writing the word themselves. We have even started to hide the word once we have had a good look and give the children the opportunity to write independently.

Can you remember any of the words that we have been reading and writing this week. (sit, sat, it, at, am)

How could you revisit this words with your family this weekend? Maybe you could set up a word treasure hunt, write them with chalk outside or write them in a card to send to someone special. They would be so proud of your writing!

Our group times this week encouraged us to think about our feelings with the text ‘The Colour Monster’. We enjoyed thinking about our emotions and sharing ways to self regulate when we are struggling to control our emotions.

Next week, we will be thinking about occupations and our futures. The Reception Team are planning a variety of visits from different occupations throughout the week. If you, or someone you know would like to come in and talk about their occupations please let a member of the team know (We’d particularly love a vet, a mechanic, a train driver or any occupations based around sport).

Focus Child Planning-

This week the EYFS staff team were excited to begin a new way of planning activities in Reception. Each week, we will have 3 focus children per class. Staff will observe them during their play, look for ways to support their interests and create activities to encourage new learning. Children will be encouraged and supported to share their cultures, hobbies and passions with their friends and share with the rest of their class. This week we have had a visit from a tortoise in Acorns, Space themed fun in Pumpkins and race car adventures in Sunflowers. Our learning can go in so many different directions- who knows what next week will bring!

Every child will be ‘Focus Child’ for one week per term. Their learning will be recorded in a special, scrapbook style Learning Journal which you will have the opportunity to look at with your child later in the year. We hope that they will become special books that you will treasure for a long time.

To support us with this process, the week before your child’s focus week you will be given a questionnaire to fill in to help us begin the process. We will also ask if you could share some photographs for your child to share on Monday morning.

We hope that you will soon see the exciting opportunities that this style of teaching will bring to your children and look forward to sharing the wonderful outcomes with you!

We have had several families kindly ask if they can make donations to school. If you would like to make one-off or regular donations to The Green Shoots Fund information can be found here- https://universityprimaryschool.org.uk/parent-information/payments/
